Horse Training

I am excited to get going on this new project of writing on a blog!  Unfortunately my sister and I are going to Arizona to see our brother.  I’m told his health isn’t doing well and we are going to see what is going on and look at options he might have besides living alone.

I am leaving my horses for 8 days.  Not only them, my dogs also.  I have never been gone from them for that amount of time!  My heart is sick; yet I feel I have got to do this trip.  Family is important.  I love my animals, but have to keep priorities straight.

Yesterday was wonderful!  My sister-in-law, her husband, their daughter and granddaughter were over.  Amily is 5 and wanted to ride a horse.  I put her on Brego.  Her mom and I took turns leading her around.  He was such a good boy!  Just as a parent is proud of their child, I felt the same way about Brego!  He even posed for the picture taking!  I cannot wait to get those pictures on this site!

Before I leave for Arizona, I had wanted to wash Ginger’s and Brego’s hooves and apply ‘Hoofheal’.  There is mud right in front of the barn.  It stays on their hooves and dries them out.  I wanted to put some protection on them before I leave.  Brego was easy to do.  He has come such a long way!  Very patient, for the most part!  Ginger?  She was terrible!  Why she decided to give me such a hard time is unknown.  I was tired, had packing to do….had to work to keep my composure.  I remembered what I had read on Julie Goodnight’s blog: “with horses and riding, it just never really ends.  There’s always another step.  You should ride where you and your horse are today and just focus on making things a little bit better with each ride.”   (I like Julie Goodnight and my dvr is set to record her show on RFD-TV. )  I remembered what she wrote and knew it applied to ANY time you handle your horse, not just riding!  Ginger is relatively new to me still.  I know that she is the  Nervous Nelly type.  But I think this was pure disobedience!         Eventually I got her hooves done up and realized that when I return I have some work to do with her!  Her personality is quite different from Brego’s…so I have to adjust the way I handle her.  It’s all a learning experience.  As long as I can make an improvement each time, I’ll be happy!

I will write what I do to get her to have more patience and be obedient on my return.
