Chapter 2

I left off where I met a woman who had recently rented a barn down the road from me.  She had acquired 9 horses (if my memory is correct) who were in need of a new home.  They all didn’t come from the same place; each had their own story.  She had plans and dreams of what she wanted to accomplish with them.  Therapy horses, rehabilitation of some to move on and become riding horses…I was excited for her and tried to help out as best as I could.  Shoveled my share of manure for sure! I have a friend who lives about 14 miles from me.  While we were visiting each other, she mentioned that a new horse facility had moved into a place not far from her.  It was called Purple Haze Standardbred Adoption Program.  It is a not-for-profit organization...

Picking up where I left off(from about 3 years ago). I am amazed how quickly spam gets in here! I have no idea how that works- is it an automatic thing that pops up on any WordPress being printed? It gets me frustrated, for sure; I feel I have to mark each one as spam and delete it! Now I am replacing those feelings of frustration with pity. Who has that sort of time or ambition to want to spam articles? I got to brush the horses 2 days ago. It was actually sunny here! I spent 30 minutes on each. They really have begun to shed! I figured that this is the start of ‘training’. The winter has been long and somewhat hard. I don’t have an indoor arena, not even an alley way in the barn! Mine is just a pole barn that needs repair. I am grateful though,...

Horse Time

I’ve retired from my current job. My last day of employment was October 30th, 2018. Besides spending time with grandchildren, I would love to spend time with my 2 horses. The years are passing quickly, and due to the weather and general conflicts with the job, family…I have hardly ridden. It’s now or never.

I got to use the trailer 3 times!  The first time was on Sept 17th.  I took Brego to a planned trail ride/ chicken barbecue.  I was so nervous!  Nervous for Brego, and for me.  The farrier came that morning. Before she came, I had decided to take Ginger.  Even though I haven’t ridden her much in the 4 years I’ve had her, I know she has had more experience. Unfortunately, Ashley said she had thrush on her front left hoof.   It was on her toe.  I never had a horse with thrush, and was quite upset to hear that!(Moving ahead, I think it was white line disease, which is a type of thrush? And THAT is another story….) So, I had to change my plans and prepared to take Brego.  It is a lot of work getting ready to use the trailer for a...

Ah, more time…

It is now September. I wish I had summer to do over. I have lists in my mind that haven’t been crossed off; so much yet to do! Sadly, I have to say to myself, “next spring”. On a brighter note, my 2 horses have had a good summer! I have taken care of them the best I could. They have fly masks, fly spray when needed, shade, and food. The heat has been oppressive at times. I sponged, or hosed them when hot. That in itself has made me happy; knowing that I have given the best care that I could. I tend to get very OCD about certain things, and the horses are one of them. I would like to do things in a certain way on a certain schedule- and get very frustrated when it doesn’t happen. I believe that I am getting over that. It’s called...

The trailer

I got the stock trailer, albeit impulsively, back in May. On August 4th, finally registered it.On August 7th,   I was going to meet up with someone about 15 miles away to go riding with.  Went to church that morning, and hurried home to get everything ready.  Had my own water in a bucket to take, saddle, brushes, etc.. I was SO excited.  I had planned on taking Ginger for the first trailer ride. The trailer was sitting in my pasture, since it was easier to teach the horses to load being easily accessible.  They also got familiar with it; the sound of opening the door; the banging and clanging. My pasture is down a little slope from my house. My husband and I (finally) got the bumper hooked to the truck.  That in itself is a test of any relationship!  This...
