What’s on your mind?
I have had Brego for 6 years. It has been quite a different experience than when I had my first horse as a teenager. I grew up with Amoreena. She was 11 months old and I was about 14 years. There was an assurance of youth; that I could do this raising and training of a young horse. Knowledge was limited to me so I didn’t have to sort through a lot of material to make sure I was doing it the “right” way. Never heard of natural horsemanship then. I just treated her as my friend. Another very important fact was that I had no fear. I never knew about all the things that could go wrong. I never expected anything to go wrong. When Amoreena was riding age, my sister got a horse too. I would take Amoreena out by herself at times, and there was no barn sour, turning around to go back to her friend. Misty, my sister’s horse, would not run the fence line whinnying. My sister Ann and I , were very fortunate! We didn’t know that horses could behave that way, and they didn’t either!
I want to find out and share with others how they sift through all the information that is out there on how to train and keep horses! I have called this blog “Ordinary horse people”. That is what I am, and I know that there are others out there just like me! Men & women who love their horses, and have to juggle family, jobs, other obligations that arise. We have to work around the economy and the rising costs of feed and hay, etc… I would love to be able to join up with Dennis Reis and Julie Goodnight and go to their clinics! Who wouldn’t want to improve their riding and horsemanship skills? I used to subscribe to a few horse magazines. I don’t anymore. I have enough stashed away to go back to when I need to know something. What I would really love to do is take my horse to a trainer and learn classical dressage! When done correctly and when the horse seems to enjoy it…it is definitely poetry in motion!
So this is my hope, that others will join in discussions about their own horses and experiences. Sometimes it is just fun to share something funny that your horse did! I was home a little bit later than normal today after work(you know, had to pick up the staples: coffee and milk)! and run an errand. I was on the porch with my husband talking about a few things when I hear Ginger, my rescue horse, neighing to me. I swear she was saying “Hurry the hell up and get down here”! As a side note, I got Ginger from Doxy’s Horse Recovery. There will be more about it later.
So my hope is this: that we can share stories, training and health tips, and whatever is relevant for us as horse owners.
