what’s on your mind?

It has been a busy winter!  Never mind the holiday season…that is another story! I hope that it was enjoyed for what it was suppose to be: the celebration of Christ’s birth.  Enough said. There has been a lot of illness going on since before Christmas!  I had it at my job. And I had it personally!   It changed a few things – I had to temporarily work at a different location. It was harder work and made me very tired at the end of the day.  Add to that the days are shorter and with the earlier darkness I didn’t get to do much besides their general care! I am feeling overwhelmed with 4 of them!  Last week there was a very warm day and most of the snow melted.  The old pony saw that grass and would not stay in the fence!  If she could...

What’s on your mind?

The other day, Thursday Dec 27  -was a very snowy stormy day.  I had to work and thankfully made it to work and home alright!  I was exhausted that day.  I wanted my husband to help me with the evening chores.  He had an excuse not to.  I realized {again} how alone I am with all of this.  I know he is not happy with the number of animals we have.  I swore to him that I WILL NEVER BRING HOME ANOTHER ANIMAL.   I mean it too.  I have my 2nd grandchild due to come next month!  My son and daughter in law (who is the one pregnant) live far enough away so it is going to be a long drive.  My daughter and her husband live far too.  She isn’t pregnant(yet).  Thank God my granddaughter isn’t too far from me!  I love my family and want to spend...

Training

I am happy to report that Ginger did well locked up for the night!  In fact, when I went down in the morning and opened the door- she looked at all the snow, and turned around to go back in the barn!  It was like she was saying, “you were right!  it was a good idea to stay in!” After work that same day, I saw that Brego had a badly  scraped knee!  I don’t know if they got to “horsing” around in the snow during the day…but I locked them up one more night.  I know about a horse who must have been running and playing during the night and the next morning the owner found him dead with a broken neck!  How awful!  The sad part was that he was to be adopted out soon.  The horse, Razor, lived at Doxy’s Horse Recovery. ...

Passive Leadership

I do not make a living working with horses.  I  don’t feel the need to compete or prove anything.  My self esteem isn’t wrapped up with having a special horse and being the best at any particular discipline.  I don’t think that makes me unmotivated.  That is just who I am.  Now, if I had the funds available, maybe I would like to learn to train a dressage horse!   But I wouldn’t want to sacrifice my horse’s happiness and and well -being for any of it. I do know however, that there are horses who actually enjoy learning and performing and even racing!  I don’t doubt that! I enjoy being with my horses.  They make me feel ‘balanced’.  Very hard to define, but I trust any horse-person would understand!  When I...

Merry Christmas!

I was hoping to have cute pictures of my animals on this blog.  You know, the pics of them in Santa hats and reindeer antlers!   Just not enough time in the day.  I was with my granddaughter this past weekend.  Since I work on Christmas day that was my Christmas celebration time!  Then there’s a full time job. I visited my son and his wife another weekend.  I am off every other weekend.  That is the only time I get 2 days off consecutively.  It is a challenge just to have time to take care of the horses and dogs!  But it feels good to know that now they are comfortable and safe.  I cleaned the barn well and put fresh bedding down.  They have good-quality hay and plenty of water.  (and a Redmond rock salt-block)!  I spent time picking up their...
