Horse Play
I believe I have mentioned before how busy life can be! I haven’t been able to ride as much as I would have liked. The weather has been warm and muggy after work. There have been a few days at the job that have totally worn me out, so I didn’t do much after coming home. I also made the choice one day to skip going on a ride and instead visit an old friend after work. I was fretting about how my horses are so out of shape, nowhere near the condition they should be. How can I make time to do all that needed to be done!? The stock trailer is parked in my field. I need to seal the floor with a water stain. I need to sand and paint some rust areas. There are weeds to be cut down in the pasture, the fence wire needs tightening…and so on! I also...

It was time to try Brego again. I was elated that Ginger did so well- it gave me the confidence I needed! I tied Brego up and prepared to get him ready to ride. He wasn’t happy. I could sense it and see it. While tied, he swung his hindquarters left and right….agitated. After the tack was on, I knew his frame of mind wasn’t where it should be. I wasn’t going to mount him yet. I walked him(in hand) down the road, about 1/4 of a mile. Upon departure, I could hear Ginger neighing; no help there. As we walked, I could see his face soften. I let him have a bit of grass here and there. When I reached the 1/4 mile mark, I found a place where I could mount. I am Waaaay too short to mount from the ground! After being on him, I made him walk...

My brother-in-law lost his fight with cancer on May 19th, 2016. Goodbye Charlie. I hope you get to ride in heaven! Charlie liked horses, even though he didn’t know much about them. He had expressed an interest in riding at one time. I regret that I never planned a day to have him come and ‘play’ with my horses, and to let him ride (with me leading). Maybe he wouldn’t have done it, but at least the offer was there. It is so easy to get caught up in the urgency of the day, the hour, the moment. I have felt that way my entire adult life! Then when something like this happens..I have to step back and reassess what is really important.

Like other “ordinary” horse owners, we are busy people. Work, children, grandchildren, sickness, shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc…. I tried to ‘fit’ my horse time in there. I would brush, love on them…maybe ride in their pasture once or twice. Very boring, for everyone! Coulda, shoulda had a plan…and implemented it! I could have made it interesting, challenging. But I didn’t. Never really had a training schedule that I stuck to. I had the best intentions… Every Spring I would be able to get on Brego and go off for a nice ride. I brought Brego home Oct. 1, 2006. So there have been a lot of Springs I was able to do this! Until yesterday. I have a week off from work, and thought a little ride would be great....

I have forgotten about this little site for awhile. Then I wasn’t able to log in…technical difficulties. I am happy that a reminder about some comments posted on here needed moderating. A call to my smart son-in-law, and all fixed! I hope I am savvy enough to remember my way around this site.. I come with a different mind-set now. Life and work and caring for all my animals is time-consuming, for sure. I am still as busy, but my job duties and hours have recently changed, for the better. YAY! However, my priorities have been modified. That should have been done a long time ago! Can’t undo the past, so it is what it is now.
